For our standard railing we use a 1 1/2" square tube top and bottom, a 1/2" square tube baluster or picket and a 2" post with a primed cap and flanged base plate.
The flanged base plate allows us to have a strong mounting point that supports the post without sealing the bottom of the tube. Steel tube will do what we call sweat in the summer heat and collect water inside the sealed tube. When the water collects in the tube it starts to rust from the inside out and if the water is still caught in the tube when it gets cold during winter time then the water at the bottom of the sealed post can freeze and break out the bottom of the post.
All our tube is at least 0.075 inches thick and this helps make our railing strong and sturdy.
